The School of Medicine, Chiba University cultivates the advanced abilities required by medical professionals and life science researchers who will advance the human health and welfare, challenging diseases and developing biomedical sciences.
Goals to be achieved by the graduate in the School of Medicine, Chiba University
I. Ethics and professionalism
The medical graduate from the School of Medicine, Chiba University, respect patients, their families, and medical team members, have a sense of responsibility and ethics required for medical practice, evaluate themselves as physicians, and recognize the importance and means of improving themselves throughout life. The graduate must demonstrate to:
Thoughts and attitude as a physician

3. treat patients in an altruistic, truthful, sincere, and sympathetic manner.
4. have an interest in and respect for the psychological, social, and cultural backgrounds of patients and their families.

II. Medical and related knowledge
The medical graduate from the School of Medicine, Chiba University, have knowledge of basic, clinical, and social medicine, and apply this in medical practice. They also have knowledge spanning life science, demography, the environment, and other related fields, which form the basis of medicine, and understand their principles. In order to achieve these outcomes, the graduate must demonstrate and apply the following knowledge in practice:
- The structure and normal functioning of the human body
- The development and growth of the human body, aging, and death
- The mentality and behavior of humans
- Etiology, structural and functional abnormalities, and the prevention and natural course of diseases
- Pharmacology and treatment
- Epidemiology, demography, and environment
- Medical safety and crisis management
- Cultural and social factors that affect medicine and health care
III. Medical practice
The medical graduate from the School of Medicine, Chiba University, have respect and compassion for others, and are able to provide appropriate and effective health care to individual patients and promote their health. They have the ability to design plans in order to make a diagnosis and treat common chronic and acute health problems by integrating knowledge from medical and related fields. The graduate must be able to:
- interview patients to accurately assess their medical history including psychological and social backgrounds.
- perform physical examinations and basic clinical procedures (including psychological, neurological, genital, and orthopedic diagnoses) for adult and pediatric patients. In order to do so, the graduate must be able to :
- make differential diagnosis, problem lists, and medical records.
- perform clinical, laboratory, and pathological tests as well as diagnostic imaging necessary to diagnose and treat common diseases and disorders, and understand the implications of the results.
- design evidence-based diagnosis and treatment plans for common disorders in consideration of the psychological, social, and cultural backgrounds of patients as well as epidemiological factors.
- develop effective relationships with patients required for medical practice.
- administer basic patient management.
- ensure the safety of patients in medical practice.
- become involved in rehabilitation, community health care, emergency medicine, and intensive treatment.

IV. Communication skills
The medical graduate from the School of Medicine, Chiba University, are effective and caring communicators, understand others, and establish trusting relationships while respecting others in medical practice. They appropriately create and process medical documents, and assume responsibility for information exchange and recording. The graduate must be able to:
- effectively communicate with others based on the general principles.
- listen to, sympathize with, understand, and support patients, their families, and medical team members in consideration of their personal, cultural, and social backgrounds.
- develop good relationships with patients, their families, and medical team members through communication, collect information, give explanations and obtain consent, and are involved in basic health care and educational activities.
- write and process diagnostic reports, scientific papers, and other documents in accordance with the regulations.
V. Contribution to medical science, medicine, health care, and society
The medical graduate from the School of Medicine, Chiba University, understand the possibilities of social contribution through medical insurance and health systems, medical services in accordance with organizational and administrative regulations as well as medical practice, research, and development. The medical graduate must demonstrate to:
- understand insurance and other medical systems.
- understand the important roles played by a variety of health professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of patients as well as the maintenance and promotion of their health.
- understand the importance of the appropriate use of medical resources, including local health, welfare, and nursing care facilities, for patients.
- appropriately select health care facilities to help maintain and enhance the health of patients and their families.
- assess health and welfare issues in the community, and devise plans to prevent diseases.
- understand the necessity of their involvement in community health care.

VI. Scientific exploration
The medical graduate from the School of Medicine, Chiba University, understand the significance of research in basic, clinical, and social medicine, evaluate scientific information, develop critical thinking, think logically to generate new ideas, and design research projects in accordance with ethical principles. In order to achieve these outcomes, the graduate must demonstrate to:
- recognize as yet unsolved clinical or scientific problems, form hypotheses, and identify methods and resources to overcome them.
- conduct studies in clinical and scientific areas of interest.
- understand scientific theories and methodologies, which are the basis of medical discoveries.
- understand ethical issues involving laboratories, animal experiments, research, and patients.
- be able to clearly explain recent findings of scientific studies.
